Prime video coherence8/5/2023 ![]() This is a confident movie that feels like the first entry in career worth following.Earlier, on June 13, the premier arrived in Geneva on a four-day official visit to Switzerland. And although it takes a left turn near the end that some viewers might not like, you should at least give it credit for refusing to get complacent. It's not a masterpiece, not by a long shot, but it does demonstrate a refreshing willingness to embrace the unknown, the implied, the mysterious. I'll stop here because I don't want to oversell the movie. What on earth, or in the heavens, is going on? In the other house!! There are mysterious notes left on the front door numbered photographs of the principal characters (one seemingly taken that very day) accusations that a certain character is not really that character wary or secretive expressions on the faces of people you thought you could trust. The first vertigo-inducing moment comes when Hugh returns from an expedition to the only fully lighted house in the neighborhood and reports that he peeked through the windows and saw them-the members of that very group-having dinner. Also on hand is Mike ( Nicholas Brendon of "Buffy") whose greatest performance might be as a guy who isn't depressed and irritated that nobody remembers that he starred on "Roswell." There's a pagan cleric type named Beth ( Elizabeth Gracen), and a tall, volatile, bearded guy named Hugh ( Hugo Armstrong) who keeps trying to contact a friend who seems to have inside knowledge of all the strange goings-on (disrupted cell phone service, power outages and the like). Em shows up at the party with her boyfriend Kevin ( Maury Sterling of “Homeland”) who proceeds to add tension to the evening by offering up an anecdote involving his ex-girlfriend Laurie ( Lauren Maher), who's also a guest. This is an ensemble movie, but its closest thing to a protagonist is Em (Emily Foxler, who has a great reactive face), a dancer whose career has suffered an unspecified setback. What's being threatened in "Coherence" is who they are, or what they think they are not just the integrity of their bodies (though that's at risk, too) but their identities. The characters are frightened by what they don't know, then by the implications of what they've been able to figure out. (Spoilers start in the next paragraph.) And it's genuinely more of a horror film than a suspense or "terror" film because, while there's some violence, the source of unease is philosophical. This is a less-is-more science fiction-horror tale, indebted to the original "The Twilight Zone" (particularly "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street") as well Luis Bunuel's " The Exterminating Angel," as well as certain recent science fiction indies that I won't name here because I did, you'd immediately deduce the film's first big twist. Once "Coherence" delves into its premise, the viewer is bound to come down with a bad case of the creeps. ![]() Even on a moonless night in a forest, your eyes adjust.Īmazingly, though, none of the movie's technical or artistic shortcomings prove to be deal breakers. That the comet has allegedly wrought havoc with electricity only partly excuses this. When the characters venture outdoors, it's hard to tell what's going on because you can barely see the actors. A lot of the action in this night-set film is confined to the interior of the house. It's shot with multiple video cameras, often wildly, and while much of the overlapping dialogue is comprehensible, some sinks into audio muck. "Coherence" was produced on a shoestring. ![]()

Rush drummer set 3608/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Peart’s love of literature is evident in the lyrics he wrote for some of the most popular Rush songs. They also later urged Peart to write lyrics for the band’s second studio album. Although they thought his style maniacal, Lee and Lifeson recognized his talent and hired Peart two weeks before the start of the band’s first US tour. When Rush was seeking a replacement for their founding drummer, Peart showed up for the audition with his gear stored in trash cans in the back of a Ford Pinto. Unsuccessful there, Peart returned to Canada 18 months later. After school, he moved to London and played with several bands and did studio session work. He took lessons, played for a number of local bands and performed in towns around southern Ontario into his late teens. And I became completely monomania, obsessed all through my teens. I was fairly adjusted socially up until that time. I’d done well in school up until that time. ![]() As he explained to National Public Radio in 2015, “Everything disappeared. Peart started playing drums at the age of 13 and became transfixed by it. He grew up and went to school in Port Dalhousie, a town on the shore of Lake Ontario. Neil Ellwood Peart was born on Septemin Hagersville, near Hamilton, Ontario. However, as aggressive and meticulous as Peart’s rock percussion work was, his contributions to Rush’s songs and lyrics displayed an unusual musical sensibility and creative gift of language. His 360º kit-with dozens of drums, cymbals, chimes and accessories-and structured drum solos became his signature. Modeling himself after Keith Moon (The Who) and John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Peart was distinguished by an intense and flamboyant drumming style. An inspiration to millions with an unmistakable sound who spawned generations of musicians-like myself-to pick up two sticks and chase a dream.” Dave Grohl, former drummer for Nirvana and leader of Foo Fighters, said, “Today, the world lost a true giant in the history of rock and roll. Numerous rock musicians paid tribute to Peart and his contributions. ![]() Peart was also the primary lyricist for the band after he joined bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson in July 1974 to replace the original Rush drummer, John Rutsey. Peart was internationally recognized for his virtuosity, precision and innovation as a drummer with the Canadian rock trio Rush. A statement from the band said, “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma).” Neil Peart, drummer for the rock band Rush, died on January 7 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 67. ![]()

![]() ![]() In order to better predict these movements, we first need know what they're feeding on, where and when. ![]() A large part of this relates to how flying-foxes move in and out of urban areas in response to changes in the availability of food across the entire landscape. We are trying to understand how we can better manage flying-foxes and their habitat so populations can persist and co-exist with humans. Credit: Pia Lentini, University of Melbourn Why are we collecting this data? Flying foxes use a very broad range of vegetation types: rainforests, forests, woodlands, swamps, mangroves, thickets, orchards and farmland, and even botanical gardens, and are often found close to water. Where their distributions overlap, it is not uncommon for the species to roost together to form mixed camps. They are amongst the most mobile mammals on earth and can track changes in their preferred foods across much of Australia's north and east - where they are very important for pollination and seed dispersal in forests.įour species that occur on Australia's mainland are the focus of this app: the Grey-headed, Black, Little red and Spectacled flying-fox. ![]() You can record sightings of flying foxes, view all of your previous records, and see a map of where other citizen scientists have recorded flying foxes in your area.įlying-foxes are large bats that feed at night on nectar, pollen and fruit, and roost by day in colonies in the thousands. The CAUL Urban Wildlife app lets you help to monitor native wildlife in Australian cities. This means we need to carefully balance the conservation of these ecologically important species with the needs and concerns of the community. However, flying-fox populations have also experienced declines since European colonisation due to habitat destruction and persecution, and the Grey-headed and Spectacled flying-fox are listed nationally as threatened species. More information about these aspects of their biology will help us understand why they move in and out of cities.įlying foxes in urban areas causes community concern because roosting flying-foxes are noisy, smelly, can damage vegetation and property, and are often perceived as carriers of diseases. However, we don’t know enough about how flying foxes are using the urban environment and the types of plants they like to feed on across the entire year. Flying-fox roosts are becoming increasingly urban, which may be because these areas provide good feeding opportunities and/or because they are losing habitat elsewhere. ![]()

Faceless person in dream8/4/2023 ![]() ![]() The Meaning of Not Seeing Faces in Dreamsĭreams are complex and multifaceted phenomena, incorporating various elements of an individual's thoughts, memories, and emotions. ![]() By exploring the possible explanations behind these faceless characters, one can gain valuable insights into the workings of the subconscious mind and the intricate tapestry of human dreams. In some cases, faceless people can also represent suppressed emotions or unresolved issues, manifesting as enigmatic figures that the dreamer is unable to fully comprehend or confront.įaceless people in dreams are a captivating and enigmatic phenomenon that can be attributed to various cognitive, emotional, and psychological factors. Encountering strangers in dreams can evoke feelings of insecurity, jealousy, or inadequacy, as the dreamer may perceive these unknown characters as threats or rivals. Faceless characters may also serve as a mirror, reflecting the dreamer's feelings of anonymity or insignificance in their waking life.įurthermore, the presence of faceless individuals in dreams may hold emotional significance for the dreamer. In this context, the absence of facial features can symbolize a lack of self-knowledge or self-awareness, indicating that the dreamer is grappling with questions of personal identity or struggling to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses. By presenting faceless individuals, the brain can efficiently convey the presence of others without devoting excessive resources to their physical appearance.Īnother intriguing theory posits that faceless people in dreams may represent aspects of the dreamer's own self or identity. Creating detailed facial features for evey dream character may be an unnecessary expenditure of energy, particularly when the focus of the dream is on other aspects, such as a specific emotion or narrative. One possible explanation for faceless people in dreams is the brain's attempt to conserve cognitive resources during sleep. However, even during REM sleep, some individuals may still encounter faceless characters, suggesting that other factors may be at play. On the other hand, REM sleep, known for its vivid and sometimes bizarre dreamscapes, often features clearer images, including well-defined faces. In non-REM sleep, which is characterized by less vivid and more thought-oriented dreams, faces may be less distinct due to the absence of strong visual stimuli. The appearance of faceless individuals in dreams can be attributed to several factors, ranging from the way the brain processes visual information during sleep to the emotional and psychological significance of such characters. By delving into the possible reasons behind faceless people in dreams, one can gain a better understanding of the complex cognitive processes that occur during sleep, as well as the potential implications for one's waking life. This phenomenon, in which dream characters lack discernible facial features, has led to various interpretations and theories. ![]() One particularly captivating aspect of dreams is the presence of faceless people, which has piqued the interest of dream researchers, psychologists, and curious dreamers alike.
